Not all Fly Fishing Guides tie flies. Some do, but poorly, and some are beyond master status. The guide who makes time at the vise to insure a peep's success, using years of experience in the art of observation can be a different level of dangerous. There is some serious behind the scenes sorcery going on before your guide trip and the majority of you have idea nada it's even happening. Guide flies are exactly as they sound; easy, quick, efficient and in many cases, specific to a region, water shed, shop or even down to a single boat. Exclusive use or knowledge of such weapons of mass destruction require membership. You have to know somebody who trusts you, trusts in the importance of trust when passing potent patterns about. Book a trip with a guide they say. I say book a trip with a guide who ties flies. Casts and drifts, mends and managing will only take you part way in solving the puzzle. The rest of the solution is in a fly box and frankly, a guide box is better.
Let the 6 people who read this rubbish in on who Juan Ramirez is and where you typically wreck fish with your clients?

I am
a full time guide in Colorado Springs, CO and a fly tier and fly designer. I’ve been guiding for about 18 years with the
last 5 years being full time. I’ve been
tying flies seriously for about 22 years.
I have about fifteen fly patterns with Montana Fly Company that are
distributed worldwide to fly shops. Some
of my more popular ones are the Hopper Juan, Jedi Master, Money Midge,
Kryptonite Caddis and Slim Shady. I
guide clients on both the South Platte River and the Arkansas Rivers. Most of my time is spent on the South Platte
drainage where, on any given day in the summer, you might find me on Deckers,
Cheeseman Canyon, Elevenmile Canyon or the Dream Stream sections. Other days I might be on the Arkansas
Tailwater in Pueblo, CO and some days I am on the upper Arkansas River
freestone below Salida, CO. Each one is
different and presents it’s own challenges but that’s part of the fun and the
challenge. I think I’d almost get bored
with just one or two of those locations.

How long have you been tying flies? Who showed you the ways?

I
tied my first fly when I was about 15. I
had a shoebox full of materials and I had no idea what to do with them. There was a fly tying book I had, I believe
it was written by Don Puterbaugh of Salida Colorado. I tied a few flies but I didn’t fly fish so I
gave it up. While in college, I dug out
that box and gave it another go. It
wasn’t until I was finished with college that I started tying everyday and I
have never looked back. Everything was
self taught. There was no You_Tube or
social media so we all had to learn and figure things out on our own. We didn’t have access to top-notch materials
like we do now.

I really have a crush on the John Barr Bend Hook from Umpqua, love the shape and off set. Do you have a favorite hook?

I
tie mostly for the South Platte so that means smaller hooks. With that, my favorite hook is the Daichii
1110 straight eye hook. It’s very
similar to the TMC 101 but I think it’s a bit shorter and has a decent
gap. I can tie a variety of flies on
this hook. Everything from RS2s to CDC
Compara Duns.

You Jig? That is, do you fish and tie on comp or jig hooks?

I do
tie some on jig hooks but not a lot.
Being on a tiny fly tailwater limits me on what I want to tie and fish
jig wise. My preference is to tie
stoneflies on jig hooks as well as some caddis.
Once I get to the smaller mayflies and midges, I skip the jig hooks and
use the standard smaller hooks to match the bugs better. For almost all of my guiding, I am still
running indicators. For me, on the type
of water that I guide on, this is the easiest, most effective way to teach
beginners. On the Arkansas River, I’ve
been able to use more of the jigged styled flies as well as at certain times on
the Deckers section of the South Platte during higher water. I certainly need to tie and fish more!

Material you can't live without?

It
would be Slim Rib, a ribbing material that I offer for sale. It enables me to tie small flies and it
creates incredible segmentation while staying slim and stretchy. I use it in several of my fly patterns
including the Slim Shady 5.0, Money Midge, Super Nova, Pale Ale Midge and the
Jedi Master.

It's BWO time and I've stalked your Instagram page, you have a few things figured out when it comes to imitating them little critters. Whats your go to fly this time of year?

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">When nymphing pre-hatch, there are a few options
I have to tie on. The fish will be
eating nymphs first and then emergers and possibly adults, so I need to be
prepared to have all those stages covered.
I’d start with a Slim Shady and a Jedi Master first, I have no doubt that these patterns will
work. As the hatch progresses, I would switch
one of the flies off and add and emerger or two. My first choice would be an RS2 and my second
fly would probably be a CDC loop wing or something similar. This should work for those fish that are
focused on the emerger stage. As the
hatch progresses and I start seeing noses poke out of the water, I want to go
to a dry fly. I have several patterns
that I like but one that I always end up tying on is a CDC Spun Dun in size <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">22.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"> <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">It’s
a simple pattern that has always worked and that would probably be my first
option.<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">

Belize or Alaska?

Both! I’ve never been to Belize but hopefully one
day I will go there. I’ve been to
Southeast Alaska and spent about three weeks there and that was really cool. It
was an extended studies class in college, so it wasn’t all fun and games, but I
did a lot of fishing and caught several different species of fish including
salmon and halibut. I’d love to be able
to go back there as well as other locations in Alaska to do some fishing.

I know you spend hours at the vise keeping pace with guiding needs and filling orders. If you get caught up and you are tying for fun what does it look like?

I
usually sit there and try to think up the next new design. Often times, I do, but most of them don’t
make it to the shops or even my fly box.
Sometimes I find those prototypes on my desk and give them another look
and maybe I change them a little bit and then they make it to my fly box to
test out. I also spend a lot of time
trying to make variations of my own designs to use in certain situations. I
also like to tie other people’s flies that I like. I won’t post a picture of their flies unless
I feel like they match exactly.

Music choice at the vice? Or maybe you are a Pod Cast guy?

I
usually listen to music while I am tying, but I do find myself watching a lot
of movies while tying. My music taste is
all over the place. I can listen to a
playlist ranging from Khalid to George Strait to Queen to Snoop Dogg. I can find a music station on Apple music and
let that roll for hours and be happy.
When I am watching movies, I find its easier to re-watch older movies
I’ve already seen just so I don’t have to really pay attention. Movies like the Star Wars series and the Lord
of the Rings are great for this.

Snowshoe rabbit gives me fits so I am taking some social distancing time to figure it out. What are you working on at or around your vise during the quarantine?

I am
still tying to fill the boxes and tying some back stock for the summer. What I really need to do is tie some trico
spinners. I am on year 6 of not having
enough when I need them. Maybe one of
these years I’ll figure it out.

Favorite UV Cure?

My
favorite is Deer Creek. It’s been my
favorite for years. The consistency is
just right for what I use it for and it’s not tacky when you cure it. I’ve been using it for about 10 years
now.

Besides the magic that dwells in your fly boxes, what makes a trip with Juan special?

I
would have to say that depending on what you are looking for, I can cater to
that. If you just want to show up and
catch fish, I’ll work hard to do that.
I’ll work with you to do that but some days the fish have a different
idea. My favorite trips are the ones
when people want to learn how to do something specific. When they tell me that
they’re not concerned about catching fish, they would rather learn how to do it
correctly, that makes me happy. On
certain trips, I am the one asking the client all the questions. I ask how they would set up their rig and
why? What flies and why? What weight and why? Why would you fish there and why not
there? What should be happening
soon? Do you anticipate any hatches and
why or why not? What happens if there
isn’t anything going on? Why would you
move on and when? Usually these type of clients have the skills necessary but
haven’t asked themselves the questions needed to understand the why and how. Those are my favorite trips.

I
base my guiding on three things; having
fun, learning something and trying to catch fish. Usually that works out to be a pretty good
day.

With this virus poop I'm not sure if i should be tying for run off or worse yet the Caddis of summer. I guess tying for the next few weeks lets me keep a hopeful spin on things as I build an army of BWO hard bodies. Quills, Biots and even thread bodies can be delicate unless you reinforce them with some UV cure like Solarez.

I get a few questions about UV cure epoxies. I have been using Solarez for a couple of years now after messing with a few of the others out on the market. This stuff cures hard and clear unlike some of the others which can get cloudy or crack off. I hit them quick with a "torch" at the bench then they go out side to sit in the sun before I mess with the rest of the fly. Taking the bugs outside is one extra step but it makes a big difference in the long run. Window sills inside wont work unless you open the window.

We get it. Luckily, I work with and around some very advanced thinkers for simple fishing guides. We all want nothing more than for all of you to enjoy the best fishing of the year while staying safe and healthy at home.

Super proud to announce that Colorado Angling Company will be offering half day virtual wade trips on private water starting immediately.

While we are still working on the menu of Fantasy Anglers you could potentially fish with, Joey and I are prepared to take the risks out there so you guys miss zero action. Come with us on an adventure somewhere you wish you were, out of your house, fly rod in hand, rising trout and a mute button. Drift off and imagine every cast, mend and hook set being perfect.

Our interactive menu system includes ways to change flies, mend like you do or bum a chew. Want Bob in a flat brim, Joey with a Beard, Steele with no man bun or Zimmerman in a thong? It is but a click away posers. Customize your trip to look like you have always wanted your game to look like, flawless.

Don't miss out on our version of March Madness, book a virtual trip today. Early birds will receive a Colorado Angling Buff/ respirator combo while supplies last.

Don't be an idiot, get the hell out of the house and go fishing. We are practicing safe social distancing in good, clean fresh air with brave, healthy people who refuse to get stuck in the hut.

Picture taken a from a safe distance. Brave anniversary couple throwing caution to the wind

We seriously want you guys to feel comfortable enough to book a fishing trip with us during these challenging times and we want you to know we are prepared.

Come in small family groups or with real close buds, drive yourselves and avoid the crowds of public water on your own stretch of incredible private water in the fresh air.

We are currently the only certified Social Distancing endorsed outfitter in our valley. Not real huggy in the first place.
All our guides use long handled nets.
We have been practicing the fine art of avoiding other anglers for years.
There is still TP and hand sanitizer in our rustic well ventilated out house.
Wet handshakes are being replaced by a crooked grin from the bank. No offense.
You tangle it, you fix it. (kidding, that would take way too long)
Our guide vehicles reek of hockey season, wet waders with a hint of whiskey and tobacco which may buckle your knees, but it effectively kills any and all germs. Safety first.

Further more, if you have me booked on the river you will be subjected to less of this writing nonsense which makes some of you sicker than any virus out there.

Just a few of the many indicators that winters grip is weakening. While the weather and water will be springtime moody as usual, things in general, including Trout, are looking up.
Even Midgezilla can get moody this time of year. When times get tough, when there are so many naturals in the drift they are impaled on your hook tough, you need your chip in a sea of chocolate chips to stand out. Try throwing this little headache at them next time your on the ropes in the midst of the giant midge hatch of spring.
The boat has been out of the garage (another sign of spring) and its been down the Roaring Fork as well as the lower Colorado. Things are good, mostly nymphing, but productive. Mayhem Midge, Midgezilla, Miracles, small soft hackles, chartruse eggs, and your favorite BWO nymph will keep things bent. Call ahead about floating the Fork between now and the end of May as the take out at Two Rivers is closed essentially limiting floats from West Bank down. This could make the upper river pretty crowded with boats during the prime months of March and April.

Mean while on THE Eagle River things are on the climb to prime. Judging by the crowds out there the past week I would say you all know. Let me set the record straight. The public water is fishing horribly. All the people have scared the fish into private water. There are no bugs or potential hatches left in the public stretches. They break ground on condominiums where the parking area is now at post office, the state is parking two loaders and a dump truck at guide rock in Wolcott and Alkali creek is so toxic it will melt your waders if you are upstream of Eagle. The river below Eagle is closed to everyone but locals with over 10 years of residency. I heard that was all over social media so it must be true.

The fishing report for the exceptional stretch of exclusive private water pronounced Vail Rod and Gun club that I happen to guide on is "Good and Ready". For real, all the fish and bugs and hatches and fun are there. Midges in Red, Cream, Tan, Black and Olive. Plain old thread larva, glass beads, lil flash, have fun, try tying some Corded Midges in different colors. The egg bite just started and there have been a few tan worms assaulted. Midgezilla larva is almost always on my set up. BWO's have made a few sporadic appearances on the surface but a #18-22 nymph has produced well in the early afternoons. It's going to get better by the hour, especially where I guide.

Book some time in a boat on the Eagle River for one of the states best kept secrets, Pre Run Off streamer season.

The only reason it is a big secret is that there is usually no body here for it. The resorts close before the run off gets started (usually), locals split, winter help disappears and a few PROS are left with something special all to our selves; a brief taste of something sweet to make the sour taste of muddy water almost seem bearable.

If there was a Streamer University, the Eagle River would undoubtedly be a favorite spring break location.

Timing the exact starting date of PRO is dependent on mother nature, but on a normal year, flows should start to bump somewhere between the 3rd week of April- 2nd week of May. Currently our winter flows on the Eagle in Avon are around 75 cfs, we are looking for flows of 200cfs or better to start playing with the boats. Lighter, stripped down rafts with one angler for the early, low water runs is ideal. As flows get to 300 cfs and above, 2 anglers and bigger rafts become easier to manage in a river often compared to a pinball game. Actual length of PRO can be 3 days- 2 weeks depending on clarity and flow. If it goes from spring to summer too quick this special time doesn't last long. If you live close enough to drop what you are doing, get on a call list. If you love to throw streamers, you won't be sorry.

As flows begin to rise with warmer night time temps of spring, fish are shoved into survival lanes instead of feeding lanes. Most fish have been consistently feeding for a month or two before run off or mud season as some people call it, rudely interrupts spring break. Finding fish comfortable enough to eat bugs can become a challenge. During the beginning of PRO, the flow will be melting snow from higher elevations and that can make for cold water even on a warm day. As the water temps get wacky, the behavioral drift of significant spring food sources like BWO's and Caddis will become more of the catastrophic type.. Fish become much more opportunistic feeders during their time on the bank, aggression and dominance can be key traits to eating enough.....all stuff a streamer junkie wants to hear.

If the streamer fishing is slow it usually is because these wonderful creatures have decided to focus on feeding on the surface. A thick, early season hatch will often switch trout's attention from meat and the anglers focus to the joy of dry fly fishing.

Carry On and leave your bobber rig home.
Gilled BWO #18 has been my go to large or attractor fly followed by a couple of midges. I've been tying and fishing Tim Flaglers Corded Midge Link using yellow antron as well as white with great success. Water temps and flows are low and the fish are still held up in their winter lies, deep, mid pool and hard to fool with too much nonsense. Simple tricks like keeping split shot and other junk to a minimum and getting your flies down to the fish with weighted flies instead, can make all the difference this time of year. A 2.8 Tungsten bead has done the trick getting every thing down in the water most fish are hanging around.

Separate legs on the sides of the fly while dubbing the thorax. Using lightly dubbed thread to hold the legs back helps to not sever them with tightly wrapped small thread. That being said I keep on fishing flies as the delicates fall off. Just fish for dumb fish, dumb fish don't care about tails and legs and such. They probably give zero shits about gills as well.

Tiny and plentiful can be a pain in the ass and that is especially so when the water is gin clear and low. I find trying to fool the abused trout of late summer just subsurface with Black Caddis patterns can help. The shallow riffles are full of larva and pupa, often bright yellow-pink in color and like a sunken Trico spinner, I think the fish key in on naturals that are easier to grab and ignore the adults most of the time.
When the fella in the riffle confesses that Black Caddis larva and emergers are working, don't make the mistake of grabbing something black. As in many cases, the color of the subsurface naturals do not match the color of the adults we see buzzing around. PMD nymphs are a very dark burgandy, almost black just before they hatch in their adult colors of yellow-orange-pinks. The neon green Mothers Day Caddis larva is a dark dun color in flight and the Black Caddis larva is yellow- yellow orange or pink before they hatch, abundantly, all black.
It has been two years since I have seen my favorite freestone boiled up with gorgeous muddy water. She looks healthy and alive and I am so thankful for the water this year. Since Mother Nature has decided to give generously to the river and sport we all love so much I thought I would too.
Who? You can't just be a fly fishing hashtag addict with twelve thousand friends. You need to have given some of yourself to fly fishing, not necessarily for pay. Blogger, shop bitch, manager, old guides, select younger bro's, wanna be's, anybody who has ever volunteered with Project Healing Waters and reliable shuttle drivers could qualify.

Convince me you have given more to the river than you have taken and we go get bent.

The streamer fishing has been great on the right days but Baetis has been the main snack. Fishing is still rated crazy good for the time being, give me a call and get in on this special season.

Every year I try and take some time and improve my teaching game. This year I am turning to a great American hero, Iron Man. That suit does everything, but it can be over loaded; like some of my clients. I've noticed that if Tony freakin Stark has all his power diverted to his jet boots, it is very hard to run auxiliary programs; so he needs to manage where he is concentrating his energy to be a hero. So I figure I am going to try and limit the system overloads this summer by thinking more like Iron Man. If a fella is using every available resource to just cast, asking him to watch where the flies are landing as well may just overload the system. There are between 4 and 8 programs that have to run efficiently for a guy to fish well from a boat. If one or two of those systems are drawing too much energy from the others, shit tends to blow up. I don't have some Marvel level bit of technology for you to strap to your hand so you can wave that incredibly heavy rod all day, but I can manage your level of intensity so we don't blow any circuits. Maybe make a hero out of a few of you.

Practice. I don't have a cool suit that does this for you.

Dangles lead to Tangles. Two and three fly rigs are the norm in my world. That includes when we are in the boat. There are times we need to stop waving that stick and get the bugs back to hand, but I have noticed some of you are reluctant to touch my flies. One version of the dangle is when a peep pulls all but 6 feet of fly line and the leader into the boat, leaving 2 or three heavy nymphs dangling in the water unattended. Bye bye bugs. Another popular dangle is when Mr Scaredycat grabs the leader but lets the goods wander around the boat getting into trouble until he is ready to cast again.

Don't be scared of your guides flies.

I mean he is 11 years old, his body and mind are a wash with curiosity and he has seen me do it forever. But catching him messing with his squirmy for the first time kicked me directly into Dad mode.

"Where have you learned to do that?" I ask, terrified.

"I've been watching videos" admits Sam.

Reality had harshly grabbed me in the groin as I realized my boy was turning into a man way quicker than I had back in the day. Everything is easier now, the days of not so innocently finding the answers under a bed or in the back of a closet are a distant memory, crap is but a click away. A father must be on guard. Understanding basic genetics and heredity (plant corn get corn). I am prepared to have a boy who will compulsively pound on shit until both hands are bloody, so I must keep watch to make sure he is learning the right way. I don't want him to go blind or anything.

Thirty years ago the stimuli was in a thing called a VHS tape. You could also learn a lot from magazines and stuffy old men. My insatiable thirst to do it for hours led me on a search for guidance from true masters of the craft. I found myself stimulated in hot, cluttered lofts with dudes like George and Pete or with a group of older guys in Carl's basement. I was addicted, I needed more.
I wonder how much different my kid's journey in this click and learn society will be and who, or what. will be his greatest influence. I vividly remember watching a small hunchback with a bad toupee named Fran do shit that blew my mind and it changed me forever. I worry this video thing is too diluted with crap for a young person to know who to subscribe to when trying to learn the proper way.

Protect your kids! Teach them the right way.
Don't let them watch crappy fly tying videos.
Fishing is absolutely ape shit crazy good right now. Dry flies are a great option right now as the Midgezilla hatch is in full swing. Baetis nymphs are becoming a more consistent snack as well. Full blown bedlam is here and the weather and water conditions continue to feel like spring has sprung. Book a trip now
It is also hard to buy.

4X Tippet Rib

Pale Yellow and Tan Rabbit Dubbing

For the next two months here on the Eagle, Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers this bug, a size 16 or even larger, represents the most abundant goodie snack on the menu. There are so many "Midgezilla's" in the drift that our flies often return to hand covered in them. But a really good imitation of this over sized Midge can be hard to find commercially. I get it; if I am buying flies for a shop, its a little too big for the Midge order and too small for the Caddis. It has zero bin appeal or enough bling to catch any fisherman who buys bugs and fly shops are in biz to sell, not collect flies.

If you tie, put this one on the list instead of a typical Zebra. If you are new to tying. this is a great pattern to get basics like dubbing, ribbing and thread control sharp. The natural is enormous and beyond plentiful so sometimes those fat lumpy creations you end up with when you are first starting out stand out in a crowd and get eaten.

The Stonefly on the right in the picture above has great bin appeal but the little Quill body Spider in the middle out fishes the Stone over and over. I love fishing and tying softhackles and wet flies. When tyed right, they are far from ugly but again they don't catch many fisherman. Traditional Spider patterns (like the one above) call for approx 18 barbs on the soft hackle wraps which makes for a sparse almost fragile looking bug. Trout love it but I think most of today's fisherman pass on it for a more heavily hackled fly and in my experience that is a mistake. Slim and sparse patterns simply work better.
Knocking off or manipulating some of our favorite proven patterns really began with tweaking thread and dubbing colors to better represent the naturals in local H2O. I mean the commercially tied BWO Barr emerger will get you fish on the Eagle or Colorado, but one tied slimmer and in a darker, brown/ olive color will pick up 18.623% more fish. Sorcery such as soft hackles, beads, tubing and foam getting wrapped on JuJu Baetis and Palms Special Emerger just helped an already perfect potion get way more potent.
I owe somebody royalties.
Its just fun to tinker as you acquire different skills at the vise and companies like Hareline keep giving us new stuff to experiment with. Try tying some Griffths Gnats or Renegades with some red or black dyed peacock instead of natural and jam a shuck on them. They suck.
Buckskins have always been a good producer for me and I have always tied them the traditional way which is kind of a pain, so I never used them much. Then last year I came across buckskin colored tubing from Hareline and began jamming that on jig hooks with a black tungsten bead. Maybe it was because I had a bunch of them and fished them consistently, but this fly has become one of my top attractor patterns, especially in 16 and 14's.
You have all your own stuff, you know what you are doing and you wander into a fly shop for some advice and flies. If this box, which is very specific to where you will be fishing and for the exact time of year was available; would you be tempted to rent instead of buy?
Check out this pretty cool video about Glen Canyon, give yourself 30 minutes of education and emotion this morning. I've been brushing up on some western water history with Marc Reisner's Cadillac Desert and I'm realizing how blinding this new snow can be. When powder comes from the sky in Colorado during the winter, huge blizzard or not, we tend to view it as money and report higher earnings than we really have. Mr. Reisner does an incredible job of showing how, politicians, municipalities, big ag and a little town called Los Angeles did pretty much the same thing around the turn of the last century; They got ahead of themselves. We North Americans, all of us, have a terrible history with how we manage water and I can't help but feel we are about to go down a familiar path when it comes to politics and a very unstable environment. This new Climate change report that the government gave us for dessert over Thanksgiving covers everything we humanoids have succeeded in boogering up, but around here water is gold. Until both parties, the red one and the blue one, get together and make a purple party that is interested in Mother Earths best interests's first, well then it's going to be sooner than later when waters thicker than blood, like it was in the 1930's.
I'm afraid.
Mean while the change in the weather has thinned out the crowd on the river and the fishing has been great. Midge and egg type flies are producing for us on The Eagle and the streamer bite from the boats is still solid. Fly tying season is here.
The winter box needed a little push of something bigger than a #22 Midge this morning so I threw some #6 Golden Bareback Pats together.
I know you Jig, everybody's doing it, but are you doing it with high quality materials and cutting edge techniques? Or are you just a basic Ice Dub Frenchie kind of dude?

This crazy little jig thing pictured below, caught at least 3 fish the other morning between 8 and 11; by noon I knew I could no longer keep it a secret. A Fella just knows when the web needs to know, you know? I am sitting on a pile of original work that can occasionally fool a real dumb trout and I am making a more conscience effort to share. Quality Hooks, Beads and Materials determine how well a fly works and this little cutting edge gem is no different.
You need to pack your fly boxes with these quick like. It's clearly the next big thing in fly tying. Trust me, I write a blog.

If your fly boxes look like the leprechaun’s have been pillaging them for several months, you are not alone and it’s time to put it all back together.

Fly Tying season is here and Colorado Angling Company is going FULL SWAP

FLY swap: A bunch of “genius” tyers with nothing better (because maybe it's raining for the first time in 60 days) to do than sit with each other and produce bits of magic. The perfect little pile is then criticized, scrutinized and laughed at a little before being evenly distributed among the worthy.

Fly Swap number 1 is Thursday October 4th. Yep that’s tomorrow. Crazy shit just happens at a moments notice.

Time: Evening is a good bet but if the weather is crap it might be morning but the afternoon could make sense.

Location: You find out when you RSVP. Email if you want in: bobstreb@yahoo.com

Bobber is helping with a 4 boat float for Project Healing Waters this weekend on the lower Colorado so if anyone has any secret filth they are willing to craft and donate that might be cool for a fellas conscience.

Don’t be scared.
I had some lunch with a long time fishing guide buddy a few weeks back and almost choked up my carne asada when he proclaimed everything's better now that water temps are cooling off on the Eagle. That is pretty gullible considering there are about 15 other reasons telling an intelligent steward of the water to stay away. Personally, I feel like some grounds keeper on a Monday morning after a huge 4 day tournament; my perfect course has been trampled and abused. Looking at the Eagle in this condition is sickening and it has me feeling low too.

The Eagle is cooling off, but it is lower than it has ever been. I was prepared to list bunches of scientific data on the impacts of low water on wild trout......... you can google it, there is a ton of reading material. The long and the short of it is every step we take in that river right now is screwing shit up.

Low flows mean less space. Less space for fish to spread out. Less space for bugs. Less places to spawn. Less places to hide. Less places to fish.

That could be the river telling us to fish less.

Low flows can change the water's dissolved oxygen and PH levels which affects vegetation and the overall composition of the river bed. This can greatly influence movement, feeding, habitat and reproduction of aquatic insects and in many cases, changing the biodiversity of the river. Low water combined with abnormally high levels of vegetation can hurt the population of certain insects and help the population of others, like predators. Either way expect less in the way of epic hatches next year, even if we do have a great water year there will be less bugs.

Low flows concentrate fish and rob them of safe hiding places which makes it much easier for their natural predators and snaggers to easily thin out the crowd. They also compete for limited food differently when they are all stacked up.

Brown trout are getting ready to spawn and they have less space to do it. Less space equals less success which obviously means less trouts. Low water has definitely effected the diet of fish that are about to reproduce and science shows a well fed Brown trout contains more eggs. Less space during the spawn also makes it very easy for the uneducated to tread on fresh Redds' which again means less trouts.

We are getting to the point here on the Eagle where it probably should be closed. I'm not sure how that actually happens, but I know there are a bunch of local fishermen ready to sit in the bushes with paint ball guns and pick off pricks who don't get it.

There are other places to go.........
You have to pay attention if you want to dance with trout and I see most of you Futzing instead of fishing.

Futzing is anything one does with a fly rod in hand that is not fishing.

Practice casting is a form of Futzing but a very productive one that most everyone should try before meeting your guide.

Tangles count as Futzing.

Futzed up

Time with a beer can in hand is Futzing but its often necessary to help enhance an anglers focus; or not.

The form of Futzing most notorious in the fly fishing game is the hand check. This is with out a doubt the number one reason people miss fish. They are looking down checking in on what their hands are doing instead of paying attention to the smart end of that wand they are holding. It is rarely the fly rod that complicates a good day of fishing; it is very commonly a persons own hands ruining their chances. Hands people have spent every day of their life with decide to go completely dumb and fight with each other instead of cooperate and fly fish, I see it a lot, from beginner to expert. I have a fool proof way of curing all this non sense with a quarter but you have to pay for a trip to see how that works.

Ever hear the guide 3 boats down scream set loud enough to scare you? Trust me, he doesn't want to holler. He doesn't even want to talk by this time of year, but doing two other peoples jobs while trying to do your own job and row a boat can raise a persons volume now and then. Sometimes the guide has to scare someone's rod up if their head is down. Part of the game if you aren't going to pay attention.

Lets say you are standing in front of a nice gentle glide that is giving you an easy twenty second drift. Most people Futz through at least half of that just struggling with line management. That means if you are on a four hour trip with some non listener you are really only getting two hours to get it done. If the non listener is also a non learner, you can cut that two hours down to around thirty minutes of fishing time. I'll do the numbers for you; if you pay for a four hour walk wade trip for yourself, and fish all 240 minutes perfectly it costs just over a buck a minute. If you spend the day hand checking and Futzing and get one of those thirty minute fishing days, its going to cost you more like twelve bucks a minute.

"Be a good listener today" says my guide friend Chef Anthony Mazza

Don't Futz, Fish
This warm, low water, drought year cut into my urge to publicize, analyze, or scrutinize anything fly fishing on social media. I normally apologize for my lack of attention to this blog and it's six loyal readers this time of year anyways as things are always busy, but this year was a real bitch. Thanks to everybody who changed trip times, went early, skipped the grip and grins and showed great respect for our resource, the trout and most important, the river.
Mother River needs Run Off.
Big water is her spring cleaning and while the water can be "ripping"angry, muddy and very dangerous; high water is very beneficial to everything in the riparian zone. As Fly Fishermen the effect of high water on the fishes and how to catch them in changeable water is the challenge. If you are not planning on sitting out "shoulder season", an understanding of the three phases or moods a freestone river goes through during run off can help you to continue to fool fish, just in new neighborhoods.

Phase one begins with a bump in flow. A big one.
Early signs of run off will only change flows on a freestone in 5-10% bumps and that will not normally move fish from their perfect little places. As weather patterns change and get warmer we will start to see daily rise in flows that are over 50%, which must sound a lot like a tornado siren to a trout cuz they all start to run for the shelters. When fish are moved from their comfort zone and begin setting up refuge camps along the bank they make mistakes and when this happens you need to find a brother with a boat and your streamer box, quick like. Fish are shoved from the safety of fancy condos directly into the slums where eating is more like dumpster diving than free delivery. Instead of living on easy street they now share space in wheelbarrows, bathtubs and truck-bed sized holes trying to weather the coming storm while eating crap instead of cake. Place streamers here.

Phase Two is the Remodel.
"Mud Season" here in Vail is often referred to as remodel season. People leave town after a busy ski season and a contractor shows up and remodels the hut while they are on vacation. The river goes through the same thing during the highest flows of run off. While the fish are off on vacation in the ghetto, the river is busy cleaning and rearranging things for when the water subsides and her friends move back in for the summer. This is when you wade fish from the safety of the bushes, that's where the fish are too. It's during this time when you can really get a sense for how hungry trout get when the refrigerator door is welded shut. Get your favorite big, bright and heavy ass nymph patterns out for this phase and be ready to lose both flies and fish to big flows and the fresh landscaping that's freely tumbling around down there.

Phase Three is the Homesteading.
Once flows peak and begin to slowly drop, the water warms and clears up drastically. Depending on the weather, flows drop really consistently and you can often forecast rate of drop, water temps, insect hatches and with good past data; when fish head back home. Water conditions are often perfect for hatches before fish leave the slums so they may stay around. A back alley with a feeding lane will hold fish longer than some rest area with empty vending machines. At some point the fish know its time to head back to the neighborhood where they will go through their yearly homesteading process. The biggest and baddest will get the best property and the rest will fill the many new Burroughs that run off creates. While a well placed streamer will work for a time before the fish head for home; they often are keyed on the abundance of bugs. This is a great time of year to tune up your short range dry dropper game while wading the last of the high water. The boats become more important as flows drop. This is where you find your boy again, but this time bring all your dry flies and your favorite 4 weight.
I have been involved in a few fish encounters over the years. I'm not bragging, I'll give credit where it is due, the majority of which goes to someone or something that gave me a gift along the way. Most of the credit goes to the water; I thank her every time I step in. But there have been people along the way who have influenced my casting, rowing, fishing, teaching and tying game whether they knew it or not and they deserve a thank you.

My first Thursday Thank You goes out to Mr Rim Chung, the originator of the RS2. This pattern has been a steady performer for all anglers since its inception on the South Platte a thousand years ago. The bones or original template for this little gem needs no manipulation but it is also very easy to tweek with CDC, glass beads, quill bodies, tubing, tungsten, spent wings, foam.......I could go on. I am not sure how many fish the RS2 and I have met together but the original or some variation of it has been my most productive fly for almost 20 years. Thank you Mr Chung.
No matter how it's manipulated, Rim Chung's RS2's profile will always be it's signature. I have played with the color and more successfully matched the naturals on my home water, but it's still Rim's.

I spend part of every week at the vise wrestling with Rim's incredible fly and it is on a rig most every day. That says a lot in today's market. Perfect is impossible to improve on. Thanks for paying great attention and giving all trout fisherman a perfect pattern Mr Chung.
Tie some flies, get bent and stay tuned, I have some pretty cool people to thank.
Ahhh......... spring is in the air. Birds sound different, the days are longer and warmer, fish are eating dries and I have two dozen Squirmy Worms to rebuild. The Squirmy is one of those flies, you either hate it or love it. Most anglers dislike for Le Squirm revolves around the fact that they are not the most durable of morsels. I go through this a couple of times a year, where I am left with the bones of young warriors that bravely dangled from 4X and sacrificed their bodies so others could have fun. I happily put them all back together again Steve Austin style.

Is it worth it?
Yep, in certain conditions nothing works better.

STEP ONE when tying Squirmys should be: Use razor blade to remove old material.

Rebuilding a Squirm takes less than 1:20 on average from stripping the old material to back in the box and they cost next to nothing by reusing the hook. I can usually get 2-3 fish on each one before they are spent so an hour each year is no big deal. Another good tip for extending your Squirms life is to keep them in the cooler on hot days in the boat. I have opened fly boxes on hot summer days only to be startled by a confetti bomb of squirmy parts and pieces. KEEP YOUR WORMS COLD.

Here's some of the incrediblness, feel free to substitute Trout for Bonefish or Permit and Drift Boat for skiff, just sayin.....

"Life in my world comes down to the last 40 feet," he concluded. "If there's anything left for me to do, it's to make people aware that life, and most particularly this lifestyle, is tied to the natural world and not to a credit card. Many anglers have amassed wealth that gives them the opportunity to take a fishing trip. They go to their local pro shop and buy all the right clothes, rods, reels, lines, and flies. They present their credit card. They arrive at the lodge, also pay by credit card. They step onto a skiff, resplendent with all the right clothing and tackle. The guide poles them within 40 feet of a tailing bonefish. Sadly, their credit card won't take them that last 40 feet."

"They've come all the way from Cleveland to Abaco, but with that last 40 to the bonefish, their credit card is worthless. They've forgotten to bring the skills they need, because they didn't invest the time to develop them. They were busy with their job, kids, the internet. They neglected to bring the skills to get them that last step to the fish. So, they either figure out how to have a good time, or not. But it all comes down to that last 40 feet. Life has just made it too complicated for them to understand the value of the last 40 feet."

"Everything's there. It's not just the distance to the bonefish or permit. The last 40 feet is the barometer of what you've been willing to invest. If you're just here for the gentle breezes and the boat ride, it's okay. But when you step onto the front of that skiff and there's a very serious, committed person on the other end who's trying to get you that last stretch and you don't care enough about it to have prepared yourself, your being untrue to yourself and unfair to the person at the other end of the boat. That's a hard view of the last 40 feet, but I think it's a significant view of commitment. To the rest of us who live this lifestyle, it's all about the last 40 feet.

From a trout guides perspective I'll say this, most of the magic I see happen is within 40 feet, and most of my anglers can cast comfortably and somewhat efficiently at this distance. The problems still arise however because they haven't practiced roll casting, a reach mend or proper mending techniques. We are still coming up short in the last steps to catching that fish because we are not prepared. I will say we because I have been that guy. I have been short. I have scared the hell out of fish. I have let a guide down or made him mutter something under his breath and I used a credit card to get myself into it all.

Mean while back on the Ranch we are whacking them on dries. Seriously this is the best fishing of the year. Weather wise, snow pack and water-snow equivalent numbers don't look so nice. If things stay this way it could look a lot like the drought year of 2012 around here. Run off was quick and light in 2012. We had a 4 week pre run off float season when it's usually a week at best ( it was awesome and no one was here.) We picked people up at 5 am all summer so we could be off the river by noon as to not stress fish. Our usual fun on the Eagle from the boat with dry flies didn't happen in July it happened a month earlier.
I'm no meteorologist but I have worked outside since I was 20, I got the wrinkles to prove it, this year could be a tough one for my rivers. Anything can happen around here in the next few months and we all certainly hope we get the snow we desperately need. If the snow does not come the season will be best early, like now through June, don't skip it, just plan accordingly.

I'm not sure if it was her tone, or smirk, but I quickly sensed this little sass machine had a future in high maintenance everything and had exactly zero interest in being there with her step daddy and her three brothers; let alone some old fly fishing guide. With everyone else happily fishing I took Miss Thang for a walk down the still snow covered bank to a perfect little pedestal for her to pose on. The rock is about six feet from the bank and only ankle deep once you are on it, but it is better than belly button deep if you slip off. It's a good rock to fish from and many a man has stood there, but today it would be a convenient place to stash the least interested part of my trip; the 17 year old diva portion of my responsibilities. She had great chances at a dance, would be dry and warm, look flawless and still be able to tweet; a perfect perch. With not enough room for two I stood waist deep in the freezing spring flow below her like a good boy thinking about how girls like this are going to be turning my young son inside out before I knew it. My goal was to get some line off her reel and get a bug in the drift as quick as possible so I could get someplace safer.

I hooked one on the demonstration cast.

As often happens during the hand off on a hooked fish, one of my little buddies took advantage of the queen.

The way she tipped her head and glared at me over those thousand dollar aviators clearly explained that fish getting away was my fault and one day she was going to eat men alive for fun. I hand her the rod, turn to get the hell out of there for a minute and by some miracle she is hooked up before I can reach the bank. My little Liz Taylor lands this one on her own and with a simple flip of that perfect hair dismissed me to do my job other places. I got to gettin. She got on the phone.

I'm not sure if it was sorcery or my internal guide clock telling me to wander back and face the fear, but just ten minutes later some strange force was drawing me down stream. As I got closer to my thorny rose I realized things were more horrible than I could have imagined and I might have left the dark queen alone too long. There in the snow behind "Ivanka", a good distance from where he really wanted to be, lay a gorgeous Eagle River Rainbow Trout.

I don't speak Trout real well, but I do understand some and this guy was clearly begging to be put back in the water. I scooped him up and slid into the drink next to "Crystal's" rock hoping to perform some resuscitation. I cradled my little buddy in the water and gently began to wave water over his head and gills trying to bring him back from the light. I looked up at "Lil Kardashian" who was towering over me and pretending to not know what was going on and asked "what do you figure happened here?"

"What do you mean?" my nearest witness growled.

"Well...........I just found this nice little fish in the snow behind you and I was wondering what may have happened" I say.

I'll never forget her reaction.

She said "I have no idea what you are talking about" and looked up as if she saw that trout fall from the sky. I looked up too as if I believed her.

Part of a guide's job is to read people and 17 year old girls are one of the trickiest groups to handle for even the most cunning of us. There was no safe way for me to blame her or get to the bottom of things even though the smell of her guilt had replaced my scent of terror. Still, calling this future five time divorcee out spooked the hell out of me.

That fish swam away so I am sure he wasn't out of the water that long and I figured at that point she would admit to chucking that poor fish on to dry land with an over zealous hook set or something; but no.

I never said a word about the incident to anyone that day, neither did "Crystal".I have guided the same lovely family several times since and while I may believe her to be guilty of attempted murder, she has been sweet as pie.

Listen, I can sit here and tell you "your gonna learn all these new tricks" and how I might have invented the San Juan Worm, but I honestly tie flies like all mortals (not including Craven). I have just been blessed to be a very busy guide which has led to being a very busy mad scientist at the vise. With fantastic rivers like the Roaring Fork, The Colorado and The Eagle as test labs, my fishing clients both float and wade have helped compile a ton of data regarding fly selection. You'll be happy to learn (if you come see me) that whipping together the "right" bugs is really not that complicated or time consuming.

Come carry on about trout bugs with me.
